Dog Training Advice
Follow these dog training tips to train your dog with gentle assertive training techniques. Learn how to control your dog and train your dog to stop pulling on the lead.
- Basic obedience commands include "sit", "stay", "leave", and "no". These should be spoken in a firm voice without shouting. Whatever word you choose, make sure all members of the family are consistent. Use of different words for the same command will confuse your dog.
- Ask your dog to "sit" before earning a reward, such as food, treats and giving him toys or dog chews.
- Food rewards such as dog treats can help in the short term, but you really want to train your dog to respond to verbal commands and hand signals for long term benefits.
- Reward your dog when he is behaving correctly. Rewards can include patting, head rubbing and playing a a game with a favourite toy.
- Never reward your pet when he is over excited as this will make him think this is how you want him to behave.
- Never punish a dog by smacking or shouting. Simply ignoring your dog is sufficient for him to get the message. Focus on rewarding positive behaviour, and ignoring bad behaviour.
- Train your dog to sit and become calm before leaving the house for a walk
- Asserting yourself as pack leader will encourage your dog to listen and respond to your commands.
- Teach your dog as if it is a child with gentle encouragement.
- Keep repeating a new command patiently 2 or 3 times a day until your dog understands.
